Annotations in May's hand indicate that Walter Scott's letter might have been sent to a newspaper for publication. At the top of the letter, May has added notes to the original title so that it reads, "we are happy to lay before our reader the following Letter from Professor Scott, written to Wilson Armistead Esq. of Leeds, England." On the reverse of the letter, another note in May's hand reads, "Hand copy back to S. M.
